Costello’s tooth pain is through the roof!

Here is another hilarious dental video with the two popular comedians Abbott and Costello acting out a skit about going to the dentist.

In this episode Abbott and Costello live together and work together as window washers for high rise buildings in the city. Abbott who did not get any sleep the night before because of Costello’s howling from his tooth ache, gets fed up at work with listening to Costello complain once again about his tooth. Abbott just so happens to remember that there is a dentist office in the building that they are working at and literally drags Costello to it,  kicking and screaming. This is where things get interesting. Immediately upon entering the supposed dentist office, one of the patients in the dentists chair starts screaming in agony, prompting Costello to head for the exit, but Abbott, the good friend that he is, grabs him by the belt and makes him stay. The dentist emerges from his examination room with his current patient, and proceeds to invite Costello in as if nothing ever happened with the previous screaming patient.

Upon entering the examination room, the dentist asks Costello to have a seat and this is when the fun begins…

What happens next is priceless…

This is neither a recommendation for toothbrushes for dental offices, nor an ad for the product in the video. Not even going to write about its actual name.

Exceedingly wealthy viewer’s thinking:

If it’s styled with curves like a Lamborghini Veneno Roadster; constructed of seemingly high tech titanium; presented in a slick video; narrated with a smooth voice; and touted as possessing bio compatibility, then it’s worth $4300.

Dental equipment manufacturer’s thinking:

File it in the FUNNY section!

Here’s the marketing piece:

Do YOU have anything to say about this? Leave YOUR two cents worth, and we’ll market your opinion as though it’s $2,000 worth.

Article 9 of 10

When purchasing a new intra-oral camera system it is crucial that you make sure that it is compatible with your existing dental imaging software and /or dental practice management software. These days most digital intra-oral camera systems can cross integrate with different dental management software, though in some cases, that is not the case.

Around 2009 most IOC manufacturers started creating “smart” drivers for USB operated intra oral cameras. These smart drivers allow most IOC / IOVC cameras to seamlessly integrate with most dental imaging software and dental management software solutions, that is of course, so long as you have a USB IOC/IOVC system.

Always make absolutely certain that your new IOC/IOVC dental camera system is 100% compatible with your existing dental imaging software program along with the computer hardware you use to run your dental imaging software and dental practice software.

What To Keep In Mind When Buying a New Intra-Oral Camera-

Article 8 in our series of 10 articles-

PatientView1Tips for Buying Intra Oral Dental Cameras

1-How you plan on using your new IOC should help you with deciding which system to purchase. Are you a small dental practice that only needs one wand and docking station? Or are you a large dental clinic that needs several wands and a number of intra-oral docking stations?

2-Ease of Use- Is the IOC easy to operate by yourself? How is the focusing mechanism? How is the button to take pictures or to record? Are these buttons and features easily accessible and workable allowing you to take clean and crisp images without shaking the camera from pressing to hard on buttons or manipulating the focus features?

3-Quality- Is the product FDA approved and have CE markings? Does it appear to be crafted with high quality materials or does it look and feel like a kids toy? How many MegaPixels is the actual camera? Is the lens anti-fog and anti glare? Are the LED lights of high quality as to not produce a glare off of teeth when using the IOC? How are the power cords, are they of good quality? Does the docking station seem to appear that it can withstand constant daily use?

4- How the IOC performs inside of a patient’s mouth- Is the IOC wand comfortable inside of a patients mouth? Does the camera head have a wide range view when taking pictures? Does the IOC have to auto focus all the time? A quality intra-oral dental camera should fit comfortably inside of just about any size mouth without sacrificing dental image quality. Furthermore, a good intraoral camera should not be auto focusing all the time, nor should the dental professional have to frequently focus the IOC.

5-Intra oral Camera- Optics and Lighting

Questions to ask yourself before buying an intra oral camera

When deciding on which IOC is best for your dental practice, make sure you test out your top choices before buying. Testing out a new IOC in your actual dental office will allow you to compare each of your choices directly in your working atmosphere, which will give you the best possible setting to make the best decision. Some things to keep an eye out for when comparing are-

1 -How many megapixels does the dental camera have?
2 -How is the on screen image quality and actual snapshot image quality?
3 -Quality of LED lights and how well the LED lighting works while inspecting a patients mouth, along with how it works in collaboration with the camera?
4 -Make sure to pay attention to where the CCD chip is located in IOC wand, as only the best IOC’s have their CCD chips located next to the camera for optimal image processing.
5 -Beware dental cameras that have an exceedingly high “Artifact Quotient” as this basically means the image quality will be poor and full of distortions and black out spots.

6- Cost of Intra Oral Cameras- While taking into consideration all of the information highlighted in this article, the quality of your IntraOral camera system and images there of will largely be defined by the actual cost of the intra oral camera. (Meaning, you will get what you pay for so be careful and pay attention to the details!) There are IOC systems out there that are un-certified, unregistered, and not cleared by the FDA, there are also others that are sold for peanuts on websites like Ebay and Amazon; the question is are you willing to sacrifice peace of mind, quality of care, quality of results, professionalism, profits, and possibly your business over using a sub standard and/or un-approved device that could very well shock or seriously hurt one of your patients? I did not think so…

7- Does the manufacturer offer any warranty? How many years? Do they offer an extended warranty after initial warranty?

8- Is the IOC/IOVC dental camera system compatible with your current dental imaging software and/or dental management software?

By taking time to fully understand what your dentistry practice could use in terms of benefits and features of IOC/IOVC systems, along with comparing the different components, specifications, pricing, warranties, etc. with your top IOC/IOVC system choices, should all contribute to you making the wisest selection and  investment for your dental business.

Article 7 In Our Series of 10-

QuickCam2 intraoral dental cameraComparing Intra Oral Cameras, IOC’s, and IOVC’s

There is nothing wrong with doing a little shopping around, especially when it comes to purchasing a piece of new technology that can very easily save your business time, effort, and money. It is advisable to write out a list of features and benefits you would like to come with your new intra oral camera system. This will help when comparing and tracking the numerous models from different intra oral camera manufacturers, ultimately leading you to make the best decision for your dental practice.

Conducting research on the many different types of intra oral camera models available will ultimately assist you with getting the most bang for your buck. Go online and research, call dental imaging manufacturers/distributors to send over their sales people so you can try out different models before you buy, contact manufacturers directly to see about free trial periods, get some feedback from your dentistry colleagues that are using IOC’s and IOVC’s, etc. Once again, create a basic chart or spreed sheet that has a list of features and benefits you want your new IOC/IOVC system to have. Use this chart, file, or spreed sheet to compare and track your findings per intra oral dental camera system.

When it comes to purchasing a new intra-oral camera system, there are several questions that you should be asking yourself-
How do I plan on using this new IOC within my dental practice(s)?
Is the new intra oral camera compatible with my dental management software and/or dental imaging software?
How much space will the new system take up in my office?
How easy is the intra oral camera to set up and use?
How is the image quality of the new intra-oral camera? How many megapixels?
What additional features and benefits does the new intra oral camera system have ?
How much does the new intra oral camera system cost?
Is there any warranty? If so, How Long?

General Information on Intra Oral Camera Features, Components, and Image Quality

Article 5 in our series of 10 articles-

Dental Camera lenses- Pixels, Resolution, Lens Quality
All digital images are comprised of pixels. A pixel is basically one small dot on a screen that contains one color, working in collaboration with surrounding pixels, to blend and create a clean crisp image on a screen, monitor, or digital photograph. IOC’s and IOC images are just like any other digital image or digital system, they are rated according to pixel intake, pixel output, and resolution. For example- Majority of mobile devices have cameras on them these days. Some mobile devices are fro example, only 2 megapixels, while some other mobile devices have cameras that are upwards of 10+ megapixels. In short, the more pixels/megapixels you have, more than likely, the better the picture quality and picture quality.

IOC Image Quality-
The quality of images and video output by an IOC/IOVC device are defined by numerous contributing factors, such as-the lighting of a room, the LED lighting of the IOC, the actual IOC micro camera lens, the quality of the components, and the location of the CCD chip, etc.

Some of the following are other criteria that contribute to an IOC’s image quality- Lens Flare, Distortion, Contrast, Sharpness, Noise, Dynamic Range of Color Capture, Exposure accuracy, Color Fringe, Artificial Color Banding, Tone reproduction, Imaging Artifacts, etc.

Image Modification and Storage-
Being able to not only capture high quality dental images and dental videos, but being able to have the capabilities to modify, enhance, and store visual data from an Intra oral camera or intra oral video camera can prove to be quite useful for dental professionals. This allows dental practices to save IOC images and video, edit them, save them in manageable formats, store image and video data seamlessly via most dental imaging software / dental management software, monitor and update patient progress with just a few clicks, to easily send data to other dental specialists, and to submit patient information to insurance companies for billing purposes.

As all IOC’s and IOVC’s are NOT created equal, conducting your due diligence and recording your research on each prospective IOC/ IOVC will ultimately allow you to be able to get the best Intra Oral dental camera for your practice or clinic, and doing so while getting all of the features and benefits you want and need in a new IOC/IOVC.

If you have any questions about compatibility, simply contact your dental imaging equipment retailer.

Intra Oral Camera Lighting-

The light source of an intra camera plays an integral role in the final intraoral image quality. Most IOC’s and IOVC’s have LED lights at the head of the intra oral camera. If the LED lights are not positioned correctly because of poor design, or if the LED’s are not of high quality, then the IOC/IOVC will more than likely take substandard images and video. These low quality LED’s can cause glare on patient’s teeth when using the intra oral device, which in turn, makes the IOC image and video less detailed and distorted.

Analog and Printer IOC’s
The very first IOC systems were large, cumbersome, and inefficient at storing images as they were taking and processing analog images. These analog IOC systems worked via the IOC device to take the picture, having a monitor to view the picture, and finally having a printer to print the picture. In short, the very first intra oral camera systems were tremendously hard to work with, would require more than one person to operate it, did not take the best of intra-oral dental pictures, nor were they efficient at storing images. All of these older analog intra-oral camera systems were traditionally good for were to view a patients mouth in real time or to print copies of the patient’s oral cavity. These “clunky” analog IOC’s often became to time consuming and complicated for dentists to handle especially in larger dental clinics. This ultimately led to a large number of dental professionals to stop using these cumbersome devices. The dental professionals only solutions for taking intra oral cameras was to either deal with using the archaic machine, purchase new docking stations for the IOC hand piece for every exam room,  stop using the intra oral camera machines all together, or attempt to take intra oral images with a dental camera with ring flash installed on it.

With analog images from older IOC systems being extremely large and next to impossible to store for patient tracking, dental imaging and dental x-ray equipment manufacturers knew they had to come up with a quick solution for the taking, processing, and storing of images generated by these IOC and IOVC devices. This is when the digital intra oral camera was invented. The analog intra oral camera systems most certainly contributed to the next generation of IOC/IOVC devices, also known as the digital intra oral camera systems.

Digital IOC’s , IOVC’s, and Digital Images-

The inefficient and cumbersome design of the early 1980’s intra oral camera machines was at first a let down for dental professionals, but a moment of clarity for some dental x-ray equipment manufacturers. Intra oral camera manufacturers started to design newer hand held intra-oral cameras that were built to be efficient, portable, light weight, and extremely easy to use. This is when the first corded, wireless, and USB IOC’s were introduced to the market. These newer intra oral cameras are best described as looking very similar to an over-sized battery operated toothbrush. The tip of the IOC/IOVC usually has a number of HD LED lights surrounding a high quality, micro camera lens. The USB intra-oral camera transmits images/video directly to a computer chip that works in culmination with special dental software that converts, processes, and stores the visual data on a computer, smart device, or SD card.

The new age digital intra-oral camera systems basically function the same way as the older analog systems, except that the newer digital systems work much more efficiently and effectively at taking, processing, and storing dental images and video. These newer digital intra oral camera systems innovative computer powered image processing and storage systems basically replaced the archaic, ineffective, and extremely cumbersome analog IOC systems, offering dentistry professionals an easier, faster, and much more profitable means of operating their dental practice.

Are you scared of the dentist?

Whichever answer you come up with, after watching this hilarious dental video, you may start to think again…

That being said, have you ever wondered what it would be like if you went to visit your dentist and they end up accidentally sticking themselves several times with the Novocain needle? As we are sure that this has more than likely happened to some dental professionals, Harvey Korman and Tim Conway put on a hysterical dentistry skit depicting what it would probably be like dealing with a dentist that did accidentally get stuck with a Novocain needle.

Tim Conway (dentist) prefers a shot or two of Novocain instead of laughing gas.

Harvey Korman’s trip to the dentist didn’t end well for the dentist (Tim Conway). This funny dental video came from the Carol Burnett Show in 1967. Good laughs! Tim and Harvey were so funny together. Who knew that going to the dentist could end up going so wrong. This is more than likely one of those “things” we laugh at that probably actually happened some where along the line with at least one or two dentists. So what is the moral of the story for dental practitioners? Well, beyond the obvious reasons and benefits of  actually paying attention in dental school, the more important point would be to always be aware of where you put the unused and used Novocain needles. Safety first my fellow dental professionals :)

Do all great comedians and comic teams have their own dentistry jokes? It seems so. Must be the laughing gas.

Stay tuned for more dentistry humor…
