Who Invented the Latest Version of the Intra-Oral Camera-

Back in the late 1980’s there were a few companies that were developing new IOC technology for dentists. Fuji Optical Systems of Los Gatos, CA, obtained the first registered trademark for a IOC dental camera in 1987 and launched their analog intra oral camera system the “DentaCam” under Patterson Dental Supplies later on in the same year. This new intra oral camera system was comprised of a large hand piece, bulky video processing unit, a computer for saving and transferring images / video, and a VCR to be able to watch video images. The entire intra oral camera system sold for roughly $40,000+.

Around the same time that Fuji was developing their IOC systems, there was another dental imaging manufacturer that was in the middle of developing their version of the IOC dental camera. Video Dental Concepts, a dental imaging and dental x-ray manufacturer, partnered up with a division from Panasonic, along with ETS Groux Optical Corp. to create the world’s first all in one intra oral camera system. The IOC was comprised of a dental endoscope, a light source, computer micro chips, and a high powered remote micro camera; the worlds truly first “intra-oral” camera system. These new intra oral camera innovations released by Video Dental Concepts helped to usher in the new age of hand held, wireless, and cordless  intra oral cameras, intra oral video cameras, and digital dental camera systems for the dental photography and dental imaging industry.

History of the Intra Oral Camera (IOC)

The First Types of Cameras and How They Contributed to the Advancement of Dentistry and Dental Photography
So you may be wondering when dentists started using intra oral cameras in their dentistry offices. You may be surprised to find out that the first type of camera ever being recorded used can be dated all the way back to 1839. What is interesting is that the concept of photography was first introduced to the world at the beginning of 1839 by Louis J.M. Daguerre, and by the end of that same year Alexander S. Wolcott designed and patented the first camera based off of Daguerre’s photography innovations. Alexander Wolcott’s camera captured pictures on a copper plate coated with silver, dubbing the first type photograph the Daguerrotype.

Daguerre and Wolcott’s innovations in photography paved the way for not only the evolution of photography, but also the way in which dentists were able to start cataloging visual images of pre and post op dental procedures, tracking of dental conditions, and monitoring teeth with age. The new camera technologies allowed dentistry professionals to efficiently and effectively record, catalog, monitor, and reproduce dental images which helped pave the way for the very first dental journal association- the American Journal of Dental Science.

Stepping forward about 100+ years, dentists were using traditional 35mm cameras to take extra oral and intra oral images as best as they could. Unfortunately, this method did not allow for the flash on a camera to disperse light far enough into the oral cavity to take highly detailed images. So in 1952, an inventor by the name of Lester Dine developed a radically new system for properly dispersing camera flash into a patients mouth for maximum light exposure and image quality. The new “Ring Flash” invention was such a powerful innovation in dental photography that the same concept is still used today on dedicated extra oral dental cameras, dental SLR cameras, IOC’s, and intra oral video cameras.

Since the creation of intra-oral cameras and extra oral cameras, dentists have been able to precisely take dental images of the inner and outer oral areas for use in monitoring of oral conditions and restoration of a patients teeth, gums, jaw, and mouth. From the original dental camera systems to the newer intra and extra oral dental cameras, the technological innovations developed since the initial inception of photography integrating with dentistry has most certainly come a very long way benefiting both dentistry professionals and their patients alike.

Dental Photography, Dental Cameras, and  Intra / Extra Oral Cameras

In our current day in age where the advent of digital photography, high tech medical/dental radiology systems, and digital x-ray systems have made clinical diagnostic and examination processes much quicker and substantially more efficient; many medical and dental professionals seem to forget when, where, and how all of this technology came to fruition.

This special article series is predominately about the history of where photography first started and how it contributed directly to dental photography, intra oral cameras, and dental cam imaging systems, and dental x-ray machines.

That being said…

What is an Intra Oral Camera (IOC/IOVC)?

An intra oral camera is basically a hand held dental camera that is used by a dentistry professional to view the inside of a patients mouth. There are several different types of IOC’ s and IOVC’s, some are manufactured for personal use at home and others are manufactured specifically for dental professionals that need higher quality intra oral camera components for high quality intra oral images.

IOC’s and intra oral images can serve many purposes in a dentist’s office. A dental professional uses intra-oral cameras for the in depth examination inside of a patients mouth. The IOC / IOVC allows for the dentist and patient to either view a live video feed on a monitor while the dentist is examining the patients mouth and/or IOC images are saved via USB or wireless and later viewed on a computer or tablet when the dentist is finished the examination.

The intra-oral camera allows the dentist and patient to discuss any problems that may have been discovered, allows the dentist to capture and store images of problematic areas in a patients mouth seamlessly and on the fly, helps with recreation processes with cosmetic dentistry, further assists dentists with general dental health tracking and monitoring of progress on previous dental procedures, and helps keep accurate records for overall efficient dental practice management work flow processes – file management, tracking patient treatment plans, insurance claims, billing, etc.

When most people think about a visit to the dentist, they don’t typically associate with fun times. Well, they might if they’re like Bill Murray playing the masochist in the dentist office in Little Shop of Horrors. But normally, not so much.

However, a trip to the dentist these days may reveal some new dental technology that’s actually fun. “Fun dental technology?” You ask with raised eyebrows. Yes, some dentists are certainly making a concentrated effort to change the visuals their patients have of the experience.

How Do You Connect New Dental Technology and Fun?

Sure it seems a stretch, but did you know that in some practices, patients are lucky enough to be presented with more interactivity than just the ability to see the back side of their own teeth with a Handheld Intraoral Camera Viewer like the PatientView SD below.

Handheld screen for dental patient view of teeth

PatientView SD Puts Screen in Patients’ Hands to Show Inside Their Mouths

What if the screen in the patient’s hand was actually a dental video game?

9 Dental Video Games

Believe it or not, developers are creating dental video games. Dr. Sweeney in Hesperia, CA lets kids choose games to play even while they’re in the chair. Here are some dental video games out there (in no particular order):

  1. Grush is a toothbrush that combines reality with virtual reality gaming.
  2. Dental Implant
  3. Dental Word-O-Rama
  4. Dental Jigsaw
  5. Match Three Dental
  6. Molar Madness
  7. Dental Word Search
  8. To Tell The Tooth
  9. Dental Distress

Taking New Dental Technology to the (Fun) Extreme

Even though this is not actually new dental technology, entire video game rooms are popping up in dental practices too. I wonder if the dentists use the games in their game rooms more than their patients do. Check out the game rooms in Fox Creek Family Dental, and Smile Galaxy.

Can Interactive Dental Video Games Help Teach Dentistry Students?

Abstract:

“Written and clinical tests compared the change in clinical knowledge and practical clinical skill of first-year dental students watching a clinical video recording of the three-step etch-and-rinse resin bonding system to those using an interactive dental video game teaching the same procedure. The research design was a randomized controlled trial with eighty first-year dental students enrolled in the preclinical operative dentistry course. Students’ change in knowledge was measured through written examination using a pre-test and a post-test, as well as clinical tests in the form of a benchtop shear bond strength test. There was no statistically significant difference between teaching methods in regards to change in either knowledge or clinical skills, with one minor exception relating to the wetness of dentin following etching. Students expressed their preference for an interactive self-paced method of teaching.”–Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry, College of Dentistry, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210-1267, USA.

Maybe not conclusively, but dental video games mentioned above can actually improve one’s smile!

That’s good dental humor!

By the way, here is a hilarious video of the dentist joke, “A Masochist Walks Into A Dentist’s Office” with Bill Murray and Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors.

Digital Dental Radiography

Digital Dental RadiographyBy simply harnessing a controlled burst of X-ray radiation, a radiographic image is created by penetrating oral structures at various levels prior to striking the sensor and producing an intraoral radiographic view inside of the patient’s mouth.

Prior to 1987 these images were all produced on film until French dentist Francis Mouyen gave digital imaging its first introduction into the world of dentistry.

Digital dental radiography has its advantages and disadvantages over film-based radiography. Video Dental Concepts passionately believes that the advantages of digital dental imaging strongly outweigh its disadvantages and we would like to take a moment to compare and contrast what some of these are.

Digital Dental Imaging Comparison:

VDC believes that the safety of the patient is always the top priority. One of the advantages of using a digital system is that it gives off a lower dose of radiation to both the patient and the equipment operator. The digital solution eliminates the need for film processing which often requires the use of hazardous wastes and chemicals during the processing stages. Digital imaging has the potential to improve the image with an improved gray scale that aids in diagnosis; this is accomplished without the need to re-expose the patient. Some disadvantages are the possible difficulties of ideal sensor placement when placing the wired sensors intraorally. Furthermore, the initial investment costs when procuring individual sensors, monitors, and software can be an initial setback to a dental practice, however, many dentists agree that retrofitting their practices with digital technology is well worth it and it promptly pays for itself.

System compatibility complications with other professionals, insurance companies, and future equipment upgrades are virtually nonexistent nowadays as the dental profession and its network have risen to meet the technological requirements of the 21st century. The ability to electronically transfer images via the internet has sped up communications between practitioners and insurance companies drastically. The digital method increases efficiency and enables the dental professional to spend less time adhering to administrative duties and time-consuming clerical tasks and more time helping a greater number of patients. In addition, patient education has been enhanced by the ability to use the monitor to view and explain x-ray images. Almost all of the practitioners who have made the switch from film to digital with the help of Video Dental Concepts tell us they absolutely love it, and their patients love the fact that they get in and out of the office in less time.
